Crea.

Coco era all’esordio come costumista.
Ok, allora…pensate a Marilyn Monroe. I suoi riccioli d’oro.

/English version/

This article is written in collaboration with Erika Scheggia, cinema and art addicted (https://erikacammarata.wordpress.com/), to remember Coco Chanel, a timeless icon, that inspired my blog and the new perception of myself.

There are two categories of men: the ones that give up to things as they are and the ones that want to upset their life. They work hard. They enjoy their success and they become stronger with their defaults. They stubborn themselves. And they win.

Among them, there’s Coco Chanel.

Everybody knows her as a big stylist, a clothes’ founder, a style’s innovator. A perfect equilibrium between sporty and elegant, white and black, luxury and essentiality. And that fragrance, that perfume that mixes sensuality and freshness. Chanel N.5
“Happiness is just our soul’s perfume”. But the happiness’ taste, the fable’s taste..comes from a mourning, from a deep distress. Invenction, geniality, fable come from a wide that Coco found around her. A wide that comes from Boy Capel’s missing, a fixed presence in her life: the husband if they weren’t married, the friend, the dad she never had, the son. Then his missing, his death.
But there’s an aspect of Coco’s life that appears more involved in mistery. The art.
Coco Chanel is often named an “artist’s patron”. But why?

More than a stylist, I would define her an artist. She creates. She creates imaginaries, dreams…she makes this through drawings, cloths, perfumes. She didn’t expect a fashion career. She worked during the day as seamstress and at the night she performed as a singer in a cabaret local. She was know in the scope thanks to the tune Qui a vu Coco, that narrates the adventures of a missing little dog. She was refused by many theatres, but her indipendence’s willing and her determination brought her in front of Etienne Balsan, that presented her to the world as Madame Coco. Thanks to Etienne, she enters being a part of the french aristocracy, but she was in the vanguard and refused fashionable pompous clothes.

So, what did the genial Coco do? She created her own fashionable cloth, sewing custom clothes. They were essentials and simples clothes., not pompous but elegant. Sensation bursts into livings. The feminine’s concept begins to being redefined.
She dressed women as they felt themselves, not like men or society want to dress them. Chanel undressed her models, she released them from social conventions, she redefined them within new lines. The modern woman was just born.

She loved art and art loved her. Remaining in fashion scope, Coco worked with the cinema too, dressing big past’s actress, as Romy Schneider, named for acting Princess Sissi’s rule.
A strong relationship with her, a friendship that hides mourning and traumas under weared clothes and smiles.
One of the first star wearing a Chanel’s hat was the french actress Gabrielle Dorziat, during a public appearance. She weared the Coco’s straw hat, in the movie “Bel ami” of Guy de Maupassant, in 1911. This is Chanel beginning her career as costumist.
Between the world wars, Coco’s success is already conclamed, tha the Hollywood world loudly proclaimed her. It is in this very period that Coco dresses Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Gloria Swanson at the cinema.
And more, in 1955, thanks to Marilyn Monroe, fashion and cinema icon, Chanel’s name begins to be part of the erotic and modern imaginary. Do you want to know the reason?
Ok, then…think Mariyn Monroe. Wrapped up in white bed coverings, filmed from high. Her gold curly hair. She’s going to bed. During an interview in the magazine “Life”, at the answer: “ What do you wear on bed”? , Marilyn answered: “Only two drops of Chanel N.5”. Coco Chanel, related to the perfume’s creation as a fable to dress, said: “ A woman should wear the own perfume anywhere she would be kissed”. Must be something about Marilyn’s claim?
In november 1958, the magazine “Elle” wrote that: “The whole world desires to wear Chanel”.
Many record companies and producers, such as New Wave, asked Chanel to dress their protagonists: they are the 60s femme fatale.
But this isn’t over.
Coco doesn’t work only for the cinema – she became an art patron. During her life in fact, she loved and financied many artists. The most famous was her love for Igor Strawinsky, a russian composer.
In 1913 she assists at the premiere of “ The rite of spring”, a russian ballet of Sergej Djaglev, on Igor Strawinsky music and Vaclan Nizinskij choreography, with her big love Boy, at the theatre of Champs-Elysées. Obsessive rhythms and inusual instruments in order to create tension and strong sound effects were perhaps too much maverick for that period public. But Coco is fascinated by this and decide to finance the project. You can see this episode, with the semicomic little show with Marilyn Monroe, in the film “Coco Chanel & Igor Strawinsky”, of 2009.

Women change the way of dressing and of feeling themselves with Coco Chanel.
Now she’s beautiful, free and independent. The clothes that suggests revolutionize the old style.
In her opinion, elegance is synonymous with freedo of movement, not of forced and uncomfortable clothes.
Now the woman works and she has an active role in the society. She must always dress comfortable, she must dress her personality.
So she introduces the classical little black dress, the jacket, the tailleur, the trousers.
She draws the black dress, named Le Petite Noir; with Audrey Hepburn it will become an essential dress for women, the most important Maison Chanel cloth.
She studies the jacket to harmonise it to feminine’s shapes and it will become a timeless dress in every woman’s closet.
She’s the founder of the tailleur, a cardigan jacket with no neck, matched to a very simple long skirt. The tissue’s skirt is the jersey, a knitting tissue with shaved or honeycomb surface.
Coco braved the period’s taboo, with the creation of the trousers.
Haute-couture, pret-à-porter, accessories, watches, high-end jewelry, cosmetics, perfumes: that’s the heritage she left.

“Chanel left a style, something right identifiable now, timeless, but fashioned at the same time. Her style was of another time, but it’s survived, adapting to next decades’ modernity.
Chanel’s elegance is an attitude, a spirit, a form of surrender at a femininity full of frills”
